Hugh Sherlock Centre, Rema

The Hugh Sherlock Centre in Rema closed down 20 years ago. It is now open again, largely through the work of Lloyd Johnson (JUBBA). Lloyd is a member of the community who had a vision to reopen the school in order to give the youths and education and better opportunities in life.

The centre's two three-storey buildings were once derelict and abandoned. Now both buildings have been refurbished and include a library, computer suite and class-rooms which are used both during the day and for after-school classes. One block is used mainly by Boys Town High School, which was made possible by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF). The other is to become a skills training centre. Devon Beckford, aka Ziggy Soul, is playing a major role in establishing this. The existing music studio is to have a dance studio and a ceramics studio added and there are plans for other equipment to be brought in to provide even more opportunity. The Member of Parliament for the area, Dr Omar Davies, has played a significant role in helping to establish both the school and the skills training centre.

Larry Alexander, one of the directors of OSJ, has been involved in establishing an organisation called PORROTT (People's Outreach (Rema) Reform Organisation of Trench Town) to further develop the centre.
